Paraguay

Paraguay is one of those places that nobody thinks about visiting if you are travelling from Europe and heading towards South America. It is a country rich in hispanic history and also of turmoil due to the rulers that have governed the country during the past.

When we travelled around the world for a year between 1999 and 2000 we spent some time in the city of Asuncion. It may not have the attractions that some of the more well known cities in South America have but it is certainly worth a visit.

In Ascuncion we met Norma and Andres, a couple running a small launderette. We kept in contact with them and during the intervening time the launderette was closed due to financial reasons. It is difficult for Norma and Andres to find work, but they don't stop trying. The employment and economic situation in Paraguay is never good. Because of this Norma produces beautiful crochet work which we have been selling for her. We also buy some of it for ourselves and give it to our friends. In 2004 we paid for their son, Andresito to have English lessons. Not so he could become cheap labour for the West but so that he could eventually help Paraguay compete on equal terms with the West. In 2005 and 2006 we havenow been paying for English lessons for Andresito and his cousins Adam and Sarita. Later, we hope to help the school to teach even poorer kids that cannot afford private education. We have heard that there is a shortage of materials in state schools and we will try to help the schools that the children mentioned above attend.

How you can help

Please buy some of Norma's crochet work. We will pass the money on so that they can continue to support themselves and their children.

Alternatively, buy some of our cards, photographic prints, T-shirts and childrens stories from Junagarh Media. The more we can sell, the more we can help the children and people in Paraguay.
